Up into the highlands: lakes, a crater, a market, and cool air.
A full day inland, away from the sea. Manado is hot and humid; Tomohon and Tondano sit considerably higher, so the air stays cool all day and the afternoons often turn misty. Bring a light jacket — most guests do not expect this.
The route mixes scenery with places that carry a story. Lake Linow shifts colour through the day because of its sulphur content, from green to blue to brown depending on the angle of the sun. Lake Tondano is far larger and is where lunch happens. Moraya Fort holds what remains of the Minahasa war history, while the Tomohon Extreme Market is a traditional market that sells exactly what it sells — that stop is not for everyone, and you are free to skip it. The day closes at Makatete Hills, where Manado spreads out below as the sun goes down.
